Default 15th Northern Rivers Lancers hat badge - 1953 to 60

15th Northern Rivers Lancers hat badge - 1953 to 60

Another scarce Royal Australian Armoured Corps badge as this was only worn from around 1953 to 1960. The regiment amalgamated with 1st Royal New South Wales Lancers in 1960 to become 1/15th Royal NSW Lancers.

Hi Guys,

Bit of a longshot but I'm trying to get some info about this badge.

This badge was worn by members of the 15th Northern River Lancers during the 1950s prior to the regiment amalgamating with the 1st Light Horse (Royal NSW Lancers).

'A' squadron was RAAC, equipped with LVTa4s, amphibious tanks armed with a 75mm gun.

'B' Squadron was RAASC equipped with DUKW amphibious load carrying vehicles.

What I'm trying to ascertain is if the entire regiment wore this badge (and between what dates) or just 'A' Squadron.

Mick,

I think the RAASC element was 16 Company RAASC (Amphibious General Transport), a distinctly separate unit from NRL as shown in the ORBAT. Both were located at Shortland Camp, Newcastle, along with the RAEME workshops for the latter unit. 16 Coy RAASC was allotted under command of 15 NRL for home training and administration so clearly recognized as two separate units.

In 1956 16 Coy ceased to be u/comd 15NRL, was converted to MT with four transport platoons and one amphibious platoon. I seem to recall it had a pipe band at one stage too; this might have been later in life. By July 1959 it had been converted back to Amphib GT, with 40 and 41 Tpt Pls.

Definitely never a lettered sqn of 15 NRL although early in the piece (pre 1952(?)) while there was only A Sqn 15NRL, not a regiment, the attached RAASC coy might have been jokingly referred to as 'B Sqn' or similar.

Checked E Comd ORBAT for Oct 1952, 1 Armd Bde ORBAT for 1953, AMF ORBAT July 1955 and AMF ORBAT February 1958 for the above details.

In those days there would have been no question of whether one or both badges would have been worn, the RAASC unit would have worn their own. They may however have adopted the black beret, quite unofficially!

Cheers, Keith

Thanks Keith!

Great information. I got the info about the squadrons from the NSW Lancers website. Sounds like they need to update their info.

That would have to be considered a fairly rare badge in any case Mick, it probably wasn't produced until after the coronation of QEII in mid 1953 and 15NRL were disbanded at the end of 1956. Keith

Oh for sure - the collar badges are even harder to find than the hat badge as officers and SNCOs would only have worn them.

Some more info about this badge.

'Nomina Desertis Inscripsimus' means 'In the desert we have written our names' and was the motto supposedly suggested by Harry Chauvel (later General Sir Henry George Chauvel, GCMG, KCB (Commanding General of the Desert Mounted Corps).

The Date Palm in the centre of the badge was also the Tactical Sign for the Desert Mounted Corps that Harry commanded.

He grew up in Northern NSW and joined the forerunner to the NSW Lancers before going over the border to serve in the QMI.

Hi Keith

Would 41 Tpt Pl (Amphib) have been the same 41 Amphibious Tranport Pl RAASC based at various times at Royal Ave. Sandringham, then later at Moore St, South Melbourne, would you know?

I am seeking information on 40, 41 and 42 Amphibious Transport Platoons RAASC. 41 was based in Melbourne, 2 was based at Randwick NSW, 40 I have no idea.

Much appreciate any information on these 3 platoons.

Rgs

Rob
