Irish Guards
Got this today, apparently worn in 1914. OR's bronze cap star.

Was it only the Irish Guards wore a bronzed die struck?
I've had a bronze die struck Coldstream Guards badge with w/e lugs for years which I've labelled as an OSD collar........... |

No idea Leigh. Your Coldstream Guards bronze badge, is it like the OR's cap star ? I have one that is, but its very thin and bendy though it has blades ?

I haven't got it to hand but yes, it is of thin metal.

What do you think to it ? Genuine or Fake ? This Irish Guards one is solid and of a different pattern to the Officers OSD one i have.

Are you sure the badge in question is actually bronzed? The photos would suggest a heavily toned standard OR gm badge.

If it didn't have OSD finish I'd think it an OR's cap badge. Of lighter finish than it appears in the photos, it's identified elsewhere on the forum as an officer's collar badge in OSD finish. |

Just from the photographs, I would think that is a fairly old rankers cap badge, I don't think the Coldstream's officers wore collar badges upon SD.

I am not aware that Guards officers ever wore collar badges on SD either. Nor did ORs wear them either.

Hello John,
No I don't think you are wrong, but, I have no particular interest in the Household Division, I just noted the photographs in post ten and the suggestion that they show an OSD collar badge, in my opinion they show an old cap badge. Regards Frank |

I don't think that bronzed badges were issued to ORs, it's just a type of gilding metal where there's a heavier proportion of zinc mixed with less of the pure brass. It gives a more robust and duller looking badge, but takes more to polish it. Last edited by Toby Purcell; 29-04-21 at 02:11 PM. |
