4th armoured brigade and its components
Hi,
I want to make a frame displaying the badges worn by the units of the 4th armoured brigade. Time frame from Normandy until the end of the war. Because around september 1944 they were active in the area where I live and they helped to liberate some villages here. It composed of: - Royal scots Greys - 3rd County of london Yeomanry (from 28/07/1944 = 3rd/4th CLY) - 44th battalion RTR - 2nd Bat. K.R.R.C When possible I want to make the frame as complete as possible. I believe following unit insignia were worn on the Battledress, please correct me if I am wrong or if I am missing something. Royal scots Greys - Cap badge on the black beret - 4th armoured brigade formation sign - yellow - red armoured corps flash / strip 3rd/4th County of london Yeomanry - Cap badge on the black beret (Is there a difference between the 3rd CLY and the 3rd/4th CLY cap badge? - metal collar badges - Shoulder slip-on in the regimental colours (Dunraven ribbon called by John Mills in his book) - 'Sharpshooters' shoulder title - 4th armoured brigade formation sign - yellow - red armoured corps flash / strip 44th battalion RTR - Royal Tank Regiment cap badge on the black beret - shoulder slip ons (Purple - Yellow) - 4th armoured brigade formation sign (left sleeve) ? - Tank regiment insignia (right sleeve) ? - yellow - red armoured corps flash / strip 2nd Bat. K.R.R.C - Cap badge on the black beret ? - K.R.R.C. shoulder titles - 4th armoured brigade formation signs - yellow - red armoured corps flash / strip ? or would this have been replaced with a black flash / strip? Thanks |

The only contribution I can make is regarding the KRRC, which were badged up as you say with the exception of a dark green arm of service strip, worn below the formation sign.

Thank you, that was indeed one of the points I was not certain about.

A great project and all the best with getting it completed. You've obviously done your homework and what you've listed for the armoured regiments looks right, sorry can't comment on the KRRC but this thread on WW2Talk is almost made for your research - http://ww2talk.com/index.php?threads...brigade.58965/.
One thought to bear in mind is that these would be the ideal parade wearing of insignia, in quite a few units you can see men from the same crew with varying quantities of insignia being worn. As to the 3/4CLY, there's no difference to the cap badge between 3CLY and 3/4CLY but you should also include a 4CLY cap badge because some of the 4CLY men carried on wearing those after almalgamation. I'm not 100% sure but I think CLY collar badges were more a desert thing than NWE. If you've not had a look at these sites I would throughly recommend them for a browse, both the IWM and the NAM have uploaded more photos recently. Major Sale's photo collection on the NAM is superb - https://collection.nam.ac.uk/ and enter Major Sale, warning there are hundreds! Likewise the IWM have recently uploaded a ton of NWE photos so various searches may well help guide your project - https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/search John |

King's Royal Rifle Corps 4th Royal Horse Artillery [2] 5 Company RASC 14th Light Field Ambulance [3] 4th Armoured Brigade Workshops REME (previously 318th Workshops) 4th Armoured Brigade Ordnance Field Park Workshops No 271 Forward Delivery Squadron RAC 4th Armoured Brigade Signals Section Any remarks or tips on badges are welcome. I am still searching for the 'Sharpshooters' shoulder title. |
