I'll take your word for it Mick? but what is the small metal badge some are wearing on their berets, and what colour are the berets?

Hi Rob,

Front rank are 1st Aust Armoured Division Provost Company, their badges are the small copper oxidised General Service badge, or 'rising sun'. In most cases their berets appear to be black and if so are presumably being worn unofficially as it was only the divisional cavalry regiments who wore black berets at that time.

The remaining ranks are drawn from the armoured regiments of the division and are presumably despatch riders. They are wearing the correct khaki beret then worn by the Australian Armoured Corps.

Thank you both, do you happen to know if an original of this picture exists in any official archive?

No, it is probably from a US media outlet.

Try these:

https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/C9263

https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/C9262

Bit hard to tell, some appear to be wearing black berets and others khaki. I wonder if brand new khaki berets came out dark in monochrome photographs.

Presumably taken at much the same time as the ebay photo you have posted.
