4 New Large KC GS with a very faint MM, they could be W.B.P LTD BIRMINGHAM like this small one?

Hello Rob
I think you could well be right "W B & P Ltd Birmingham". I have noted this backmark on buttons before, as well as "B & P Ltd Birmingham" which I think is an earlier mark for the same company. I have a note that "W B & P Ltd Birmingham" were taken over by Gaunt in 1916. If this is correct (can anyone confirm?) then it would nicely date your buttons. Roger |

Thanks for the reply Roger, I wonder it that explains the badly stamped maker mark, in 1916 there was a huge demand for GS buttons so presumably Gaunt could have made these with someone else's dies and machinery and not marked the reverse fully?

It was previously known as J.J. Bent & Co. (from the oldcopper site) |

They became a limited company in 1900, so perhaps that is when they stopped using the full name and started to use just "B & P Ltd ....." as a backmark. Roger |

I bought this piece of uniform for the WM buttons, you don't often see KC GS buttons without the lion atop the crown, I already had two smaller examples but not the large 24mm version.
But now I'm wondering what uniform this was cut from, and which part, did the volunteers wear scarlet? or could this be from a Militia Battalion? All thoughts and observations welcome. Rob |

Hi Rob.
Glad you like them (you bought them from my eBay account). I could not find anything about then either, so would be good to find out more about them. All the best. Mike |

You're welcome.
Did you realise there are three sets available? or are you letting someone else have the other three? lol. Mike |

I hadn't noticed the third set, but they look similar to the second, do they have the same makers marks on the reverse?

Hi Rob.
I have just looked and there is no maker's marks to the buttons; they are blank on the reverse. If you would like them we could deal on here (to save me a few quid on eBay fees!). Cheers. Mike. |

The attached pictures of a Liverpool Scottish other ranks tunic are a clue to where the buttons came from.

Well done Peter, would the Liverpool Scottish be the only ones to wear this particular uniform?
