Hello,
Have this helmet plate and am having difficulty determining whether it would have been used on a gray cloth volunteer/home service helmet or a cap/kepi/visor.

Can anyone assist?

From what I've found, they had a dark grey uniform and started out with a shako until ~ 1881 when the uniform was changed to red and a dark grey helmet was used.
My question is whether they ever wore a grey helmet with the grey uniform or did they only start wearing a helmet after switching to the red uniform.

Hi,
The Bucks Rifle Volunteers never wore scarlet, they kept the Grey when the unit became a Volunteer Battalion of the Oxfordshire Light Infantry in 1881.

In 1908 the Grey uniform and "Rifles" busby was carried on by the Buckinghamshire Battalion which maintained its "Rifles" ethos right through until the end of its existence.

The helmet plate as pictured and as stated above was worn on the Full Dress Grey Home Service Helmet until the Rifles Busby replaced it during the 1890s.
