Request For Help - Anodised Aluminium Cap Badge Lugs
Hi Guys,
I have recently started investigating the lugs used on anodised cap badges with special regard to the lugs feet. Some lugs have no feet while others have either 'flat' or 'sweeping' designs. Attached is a rough diagram of what I mean. Would members who have badges that are maker marked ONLY to the body and also have lugs please check the lug feet type, or none, and tell me who the maker is from the marking on the badge body. The feet are not always easy to see being covered in solder but for those that can be positively identified please post here or email me you findings. So for those badges with: a) no feet b) sweeping feet c) flat feet please let me know the maker name which is usually cast or sometimes stamped into the badge body. At this stage I'm not really interested in the regimental/unit name of the badge. No need to post images also but please be as accurate as you can - if in doubt DON'T guess as I need to be as accurate as possible to indentify non maker marked badges that have lugs and to also attempt to identify when the badges were made. I have identified my own badges from my collection and it appears that a definite pattern is arising that I wish to confirm from a larger sample size. I'm interested in ALL makers but especially the TKS/TOYE maker so please get those magnifying glasses out !!! Many Thanks Chris Last edited by hagwalther; 21-02-09 at 10:49 PM. Smith & Wright - of course. I think that the TOYE has feet as I can see em and they look flat. I have the same but solder is obscuring the area between fet and lugs and I can't see if they are flat or sweeping - can you check again... I think I have worked out GAUNT OK and some FIRMIN but I still need lots of other information from all to confirm. Smith & Wright I will spend a more than a few hours on later. Many Thanks, Chris |

Hi Guys,
Attached are a couple of images of lugs that I would like to identify the maker of the badges that used them. Lug A - round wire, sweeping feet, wire approx. 1.70mm wide. Lug B - round wire, no feet, wire approx. 1.70mm wide. If you have any maker marked badges with the same attributes as above please post the makers name here. Wire width is variable due to manufacturing process and possible wear and damage but wire type and feet should be enough for now to recognise a particular lug. Note - Lug A looks like it has flat feet but on observation of the badge with a magnifying glass from various angles they are in fact sweeping or curved in shape. Hi Guys,
Here are some more lugs that I need information on. If anyone has some spare time to check out some anodised badges in their collection looking for maker marked examples with lugs and can then reconsile with any already posted or the following then please let me know. This postings lug descriptions: 1) Square wire with sweeping feet. 2) Round wire without feet. 3) Integral to Highland Brigade badge cross - common badge - any in collections with maker mark? 4) Rectangular in shape and in punched split pin hole as in many Fusilier badges - someone must have a marked Fusilier badge out there with this unique but common lug type. 5) Rectangular in shape but this time with round split pin hole. Regards Chris |

Thanks Mate,
The Royal Tank Regiment - Is the wire used round or semi-round? The Irish Guards one reconciles with a couple of unknowns in my collection and I was wondering when this company was going to turn up. Regards, Chris |

Paddy, I have attached a couple of photos for you to look at re: flat and sweeping feet. The first is from my Aberdeen University OTC and shows a defined 'platform' which make up the feet themselves. This sort of structure is what I call 'flat'. The other is from my Solihull School CCF and shows more of a sweeping structure that I expect could well have been squashed somewhat during adhesion to the badge body. This sort of structure is what I call 'sweeping'. Can you recheck your badges again and reconcile with the photos. Note also the crease on the top of the Solihull School CCF loop - do any of you Firmin marked badges have the same? Many Thanks !!! Chris |
