Airborne Forces Badges?
Hi, I have a small number of South African badges but admit to having no reference material as I mainly collect British badges! But I couldn’t let this frame slip by without trying to win it on Ebay, such a lovely grouping and in the past when bidding on similar they just Fly, and am outbid, surprised I actually Won but my main concern afterwards was if they had fittings, not unknown to see a frame of WW1 or WW2 badges and find all lugs & sliders neatly snipped off!
I quickly unpacked this and I can’t fault the guy for his packing “Overkill” comes to mind but it arrived safely so! Fair play to Him, and I wanted to allay my concerns! Frame is homemade and in truth not that great, easily remideid, have removed two badges and both have pins bent over BUT they are present and can be straightened “?” Do I actually want to do this? See picture. NOW, might I ask off you all is what do I actually have? I enjoy these but just what would be a fair accounting in cost individually (want to see if I did actually have a good deal or been stupid) Does the pins being present but bent over degrade them? The bloke has really made a nice grouping - they look tidy! I would love to know if he served but apparently this was a house clearance, many Thanks in Advance Billy Last edited by billy; 02-10-23 at 07:23 PM. |

Sorry to be pedantic, but it really grates.
There is no ‘U’ in Airborne. T |

Thanks, hopefully my nervous twitch will stop now, long enough to pour a G&T without spilling it.

Hi Billy
I'm sorry to tell you that most of those items are fake or fantasy items. The top row with the Selous Scouts type wing have been made by dealers to try and push the special forces mystery. There are a few genuine looking old South African shoulder flashes which I recognize but the rest I don't know. Unfortunately I don't have access to my books right now so I can't confirm all of them. I've circled the ones I think are ok. Cheers, Alex |

I can agree with Alex here.
Most are fantasy items created about 20 or more years ago for a growing 'Collectors' market at the time. Originally sold as 'commemorative' flashes but it was simply some clever entrepeuneur cashing in.... and it seems some people are still cashing in on these. There are however a few genuine SADF flashes among your set, but of the more common varieties. Alex has cirlcled good ones but there is one more to circle. The flash above the one in the far right corner is also good (SADF College for Educational Technology) These are nice for a display but of very little commercial value |
