RN Officer's woven red and yellow badge
Last night I watched Channel5’s 'Warship: Life At Sea', episode 1, HMS Northumberland (F238), very good.
Here's my question - the ship's captain, Commander Thom Hobbs is wearing a strange badge on his right shoulder - a very unusual badge for a RN officer to wear. It seems not worn on all his shirts or all occasions on ship. Any ID? Last edited by Smiffy; 04-01-22 at 04:40 PM. |

Based on St Oswald's Shield?
St Oswald had strong links to Peterborough Cathdral I think, Peterborough was until a few decades ago in Northamptonshire. |

There's St Oswald's Shield link to Northumberland too, featuring on some army insignia, the badge is the flag of Northumbria.

Possibly worn for port visit to Newcastle in February 2020 :
Quote:
NB: The Northumberland flag is the flag of the historic county of Northumberland and the banner of the arms for Northumberland County Council. .

The badge worn is based on the coat of arms of Northumberland.
The flag of northuberland is shown here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Northumberland I was just interested to see an unusual badge worn in this manner. |

In their Red Sea rig both the Captain and Executive Officer were wearing cummerbunds in Northumberland Tartan (aka Shepherds or Border Tartan).

Interesting, I've only seen the Shepherd's Tartan worn by 1 RRF's C.O.s Piper.
