Default A few cavalry badges for comments (pictures now re-attached)

Hi All

Continuing to sort out my dodgy from genuine items and have added pics of another 4 cavalry badges for your consideration/comments as to their authenticity.

13th Hussars badge is very thin but well struck (I have heard mention of some badges being struck thinner than usual as an economy measure, is this fact or fantasy and if fact could this badges be one of them).

7th DG badge feels right and the only concern I have is with the rather crude slider although there is no sign of it ever having been replaced.

1st LG badge, genuine or copy, if genuine what is the reason for the long slider.

RHG badge was "painted" brown when I got it, someone's crude attempt at making it look like bronze, so I have removed the thick brown paint. I have seen it mentioned in Gaylor's book that he had seen a version of this badge in polished brass. Makers mark on rear is A&W Ltd Bham.

Many thanks in advance

Paddy

Paddy,
just a quick reply!!! I'm away from my badges so cannot send an example:

I dont like 2 of the 4

(7DG)- Looks like a locally made example, the slider has had some wear and the tails bent over but I'd be happy to have it!!

(RHG) - Makers mark looks good, as for the blades, I've seen countless Household Cavalry bladed badges converted to sliders, I'm sure they must have been issued to ORs for general wear.

(1LG) - 99 times out of 100 on H.Cav badges if the V in GvR touches along the whole of the V's side rather than just at the tops of the V then it's hooky! I have one of these with a long slider just like yours, looks old, is heavy but the V touches???

(13H) - Something wrong with the detail, can't look at mine so cannot elaborate, but it looks suspect!

As always just my thoughts

Andy

The 1st Life Guards badge looks just like the one I bought from the chap in Birmingham's Rag Market one Saturday in the late 1970s - complete with the deformation of the circlet at the 11 O'clock position. He was banging these out, and very, very many others, with abandon. He never said they were reproduction, but never claimed they were genuine, either.

I am of the opinion that the RHG badge was originally OSD. It is stated that it was painted brown? That may have been an attempt by someone in the past to touch it up; or was that brown paint the original finish? I assume not, but sometimes OSD badges do have a brown painted like appearance.
The 7DG looks very good too. Not completely comfortable with the others for me.
