Default Scots Guards tunic

Good evening,

I have bought this Scots Guards tunic. On the label, TGDSM McAlpine.

I think GDSM is for Guardsman, but the T ?

Are all the Guards tunics attributed ?

TGDSM probably stands for Trainee.
As for the name in the jacket it was either a special measure jacket, or the new policy is all tunics are made to fit. Stores no longer are suppose to hold quantities of tunics

Given the measurements of the tunic, could "T" be a typo for "J" for "Junior"?

From the Scots Guards twitter feed:
"It’s a busy final week for the Trainee Guardsman of Guards 18 platoon as they prepare for their pass out parade and conduct their final Fitness test."

Also found this on another site:
"On things like your MOD90 its GDSM (guardsman) but on post that you receive it has to be TGDSM (trainee guardsman) We rarely get refereed to as recruits"

Not sure what other ex Guardsman on this Forum have experienced but certainly when I was a Recruit and indeed an Instructor at the Guards Depot, Home Service Uniform (ie the tunic, tweeds and Bearskin Cap) were never issued to Recruits, which is what I believe the term Trainee Guardsman refers to.

There could of course be exceptions but I think it unlikely. The Home Service Uniform was only ever issued when stationed in London District and when the Battalion in question was assigned a Public Duties/Infantry role and would be returned to stores when stationed elsewhere.

As regards to the naming of Guardsmans tunics, again in my day this would be the exception to the rule. Normally an approximately sized tunic would be issued and then a parade would take place where the Master Tailor would put a few chalk marks here and there and lo and behold a few days later the tunic would appear from the Tailors Shop with the alterations completed. The only named tunics would be for those who needed a tunic to be made due their size or dimensions which could not be supplied from existing stock and the order would be outsourced to a clothing Company.

This was all some time ago so I would be interested to hear what has changed!

Simon.

I only joined in 1987 and wasn't issued home service clothing either.

Only the trainees destined for a bn performing ceremonial duties would be fitted for new tunic.

The trainee Guardsman would probably be destined for F Company SCOTS GUARDS and public duties as his first posting.

Likewise there is an incremental Nijmegen Company Grenadier Guards and Number 7 Company Coldstream Guards. All permanently based in Wellington Barracks, London and providing men for public duties.

Not sure what happens to trainees for the Welsh and Irish Guards?

I was the same as you and Hawthorn Andy. Didnt get issued a tunic till I got the Bn. Allthough as a gdsm I did put my name in mine in felt pen.

But the Rcts from the Guards Company in Catterick seem to pass out in Tunic/Greatcoat order these days.
