Slouch hats or "Smashers" from the Boer War period. Very strange to see mixed with those uniforms.

A lot of VBs took to wearing the slouch hat just after the Boer War.
Here is the 6th Fifeshire VB, notice how high the Thane of Fife badge is worn on the hat. The young lad below wears the cloth shoulder titles RH 6V. |

I believe that when SD was introduced in 1902 there was no single official headdress to accompany it. Thus a free for all.
