CHARGING FOR PAY PAL
Having seen verious refrences to diffrent dealers charging or not charging for those who decide to use Pay Pal as a payment method , I have decided to open a debate on the subject please keep it clean and with no names of businesses or slaging dealers / members off !! and be civil about it !!!
1 reason I charge for pay pal is : Why should I pay the fees if you decide to use Pay Pal , as if I charge those who use it it keeps my costs down which means I am able to keep my prices lower than most other dealers and it only affects those who decide to pay this way with Pay Pal !! I do however raise my postage/shipping a tad as they take a cut of that too! Any dealer/seller who adds/charges for Paypal on the sale of the item should be asking himself why! I bet they don't charge for credit card payment. Andy |

I don't charge for buyers using paypal and my postage costs ( 1st class recorded mainly ), are only a few pence more than the actual cost charged by the Royal Mail.
Paypal is easier and safer but a bind when something sells for a decent price, I am happy to absorb the 3% paypal charges but totally against the 12% - 15% that ebay charges ( I don't know that actual percentage ), being paid with a cheque is a bigger bind, to me anyway. That's it, my last post, I'm looking forward to dealing on ebay without worrying about what some people think of me................... Have a very Merry Christmas and I hope that Father Christmas brings you what you want, be it a nice badge or even for some, a conscience..... Dave. |

Pay Pal charge 3.9 % + 20p non busines users below £20,000 per year aprox for payments recived 2.9% + 20p business users above £20,000 per year aprox for payments recived if your signed up to it !!! yes you have to ask for it !!! I have decide not to trade through ebay due to their costs as I can get a rate from 5% from auction houses for the right items or volume but I do have my own web sites ( A new badge site and a millitaria site ) If I chose to pay buy Pay Pal from people / dealers I am happy to pay the costs involved as I have chosen the method of payment and they should not have to put up with the costs involed , I only charge 3 % of the cost of Pay Pal and not the full amount if you use a credit card in auction houses etc you will get charged for the use of it from 5% total spend normaly and I normally still pay some towards their costs . steve |

Hi Andy
I normally post 2 days a week about 20 orders per week from my sites and will happly post to those regulars once I recive the cheque and in some cases those who use my sites regular the 1st opportunity knowing that the cheque will arrive quite quickly if under the £50 mark as some of the regulars here will know . I do prefer cheques rather than pay pal its better for me steve |

Hi Guys,
As I am involved in online retail, my thoughts about PAYPAL are quite straight forward. I think its an unsafe method of receiving payment if you are a vendor (more below on this) but customers like to use it so we offer it (somewhat reluctantly) as it helps sales. As much as I'd also like to add a surcharge (like Australian merchants can do for Visa/MC etc) it is against their T&Cs - sly bastards! Why do I think it is unsafe? Simple - you are at their mercy when it comes to disputes with customers and it is well documented by many vendors that they had their PAYPAL account frozen and unable to access their funds because PAYPAL suspected something dodgy. I have also seen a friend (who is a solicitor) receive payment via PAYPAL for a transaction and then the buyer tells PAYPAL it's dodgy to screw him over. PAYPAL sides with buyer, reverses the transaction without getting all the facts and then sends debt collectors! Needless to say, a typical example of risks vendors get exposed to when using PAYPAL. I actively encourage people to purchase items (mostly books) via credit card rather than use PAYPAL. Mick

Charging for PayPal
My understanding is that it was against Ebay trading rules to charge for PayPal. I can understand why some people do it but consider it unfare.
If a dealer cannot comply by the rules then they shouldn't take PayPal. |

Ebay only say that so they can make more $$$ from it - no other reason.

To be honest the only method of payment which is safe is cash over a counter / table even this has its problems ( forgerd notes , customers wanting cash back a few minutes later changed there minds etc ) the other methods all have there own problems but much worse ie forged / stollen cards cheque etc steve |

I think you will find it is against eBay rules to add a surcharge. See below from eBay.
'Sellers may not charge eBay buyers an additional fee for their use of ordinary forms of payment, including acceptance of cheques, money orders, electronic transfers or credit cards, except as described below. Such costs should be built into the price of the item. Breaches of this policy may result in a range of actions, including: Listing cancellation Limits on account privileges Account suspension Forfeit of eBay fees on cancelled listings Loss of PowerSeller status' |

Thats correct I dont go much on companys which force a seller to use there own company for a payment method and then charge you the seller if custermers want to use it when they pay you I dont sell on ebay and have a seprate business away from ebay and their rules . In all ebay and pay pal take nearly 18% of ones sale and postage costs away on items below £500.00 as I have said before I can get commison rate of 5% from some auction houses depending on what I sell through them . |

I don't charge for PayPal or credit cards. I don't think that it has anything to do with the buyer. The price you see is what you should pay. I get miffed when I buy something and I get told to add X to the price for costs that I feel should be the sellers responsibility. You don't get asked to add £5 to help with the rent or something like that. Nobody would stand for it, so why move other costs to the customer. If you accept a form of payment, then it should be your responsibility. Regards Andrew
