Default Independent Water Transport Unit, Royal Engineers

Hi,

Looking for some information on this unit for a good friend. His father served with them post 1956 and ended up being imprisoned in Salem Prison, Tobruk by the Egyptians.

Lance Corporal Joseph Medex No. 23482522 (d.o.b. 27.01.1938.).

I would like to add that the gentleman referred to now suffers from Alzheimer's and perhaps his recollection of Independent Water Unit should read Inland water Transport Unit. Whatever, his family would like further details on his military career if possible.

Any help or guidance on his service record or what the Independent Water Transport Unit/Inland Water Transport Unit, RE were doing for him to be arrested by the Egyptians would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Andy
