Seeking Information Regarding the Royal Scots Fusiliers
In an effort to complete a Scottish badge display I've been working on for he past 18 months I am stumped about some tartan badge backing for this regiment.
Are there any former members of the regiment on the forum who might be able to help solve my dilemma? Thanks, Terry

Royal Scots Fusiliers Tartan backing
Hi Terry, Never been a member of the RSF, though John Gaylor's book
Military Badge Collecting says on the Tartan Backings page Royal Scots Fusiliers (until 1948) 42nd Tartan (the lack of features in this dark blue/black/green tartan makes it difficult, if not impossible to identify a specific patch). Royal Scots Fusiliers (after 1948) Hunting Erskine. Gentlemen, Thank you everyone for your replies. My apology for not being more clear. I am actually working with Snowdrop 68 to find a finite answer to the question. Let me phrase the question hopefully better.
I know they wore the Government tartan until 1948 when they changed to Hunting Erskine. What I don't know is when they wore the Government tartan was it aways worn as a square or was it changed ,or also worn as a rectangle? I would ask the same for the Hunting Erskine - always as a square or as a rectangle? Hope this makes sense and appreciate any help or references. Terry

The only head dress worn with a tartan backing for the badge was the khaki Tam, and it was always a square backing for the badge for all regiments that wore them. This applies to both the Government and hunting Erskine in the RSF.
Regimental Tartan flashes of rectangular, square or badge shapes were only worn on the BD blouses. CB

Thanks CB, I know there are a few that wear the square as a diamond, but just wasn't sure about the rectangle. A few examples
15th Paras 3.jpg 32 Signals 9.jpg SA 1st City Regiment w Marron Center for Airborne.jpg Transvall Highlanders w Tartan.jpg 154 RLC 4.jpg I do know the cap the badge is worn on can make a difference too, but 32 Signals wear a tartan backing on their Glengarry. 32 Signals Glengarry 1.jpg Terry

Hello Terry here's an example of mine, backing is actually in two parts, a smaller rectangle, with a larger rectangle behind, not sure of tartan name.

As they say "A picture is worth a thousand words"!!! Thank you very much for sharing. One looks square and one rectangular. Both of your badges are on Government or commonly called Black Watch tartan. Terry

Those earlier RSF backings are technically supposed to be square, but may have been cut slightly off even or lost some the vertical edging through wear over time.
I know that modern beret backings are not always square, but not for the older Tams. CB

I just ran across this video on he Royal Scots Fusiliers and in the very brief section about 40 seconds in, I have to say that he tartan backing on their Tams looks ot be rectangular to me, i.e. the backing looks taller than it does wide.
I cannot determine the actual date, but assume it is pre 1948 when they switched ot the Hunting Erskine tartan. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMB-SC4UyUw I would appreciate others thoughts or opinions. Thanks, Terry

Good eye Terry. Technically, they were supposed to be square, but obviously not worn as such, post war at any rate.
