Default Kings Own Borderers

Having collected Line Infantry Officers waist belt clasps 1855-1901 for over 30 years, I had been specifically looking for an example of the Kings Own Borderers clasp worn 1881-1887 for the last 15 years to fill a gap in the display (I had left a gap for 25years, before I eventually put a KOSB dirk plate in the gap).

I had all but given up hope as I had never seen even a photo of one, let alone handled an example, indeed the only reference was in Ryans wonderful book that describes it in a 1900 regimental newsletter and also an original dye press stamp for making a variation of the outer ring that I managed to obtain.

But then just like buses, two came along at once (well within a few months of each other), but with variations in the KINGS, having an apostrophe in one (KINGS'S) and lacking it in the other (KINGS). What's odd is the apostrophe and lack of apostrophe also appears in the numbered 25th clasps of 1855-1881.

If anyone knows the reason for the apostrophe variations I would love to know.

I must apologise to the regimental collectors I must have outbid.

Queen's Regs 1844, amazing condition, amazing cheap price,

Default Royal Devon Yeomanry

As a staybright collector I am at a stage of adding those rare (and more expensive) badges to my collection. Very happy to have completed the Royal Devon Yeomanry trio.

Royal Devon Yeomanry Artillery - Firmin London
Royal Devon Yeomanry - J. R. Gaunt, B'Ham
Royal Devon Yeomanry/1st Rifles Volunteers - J. R. Gaunt, London Ltd.

Oh! and by the way I have a 12th Royal Lancers on the way. So quite a good 2023.

Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year to all on the Forum.

Best regards,

Ian

[QUOTE=BROOKIES;616083]Afternoon all.

Two of my best purchases of the year (a bloody expensive one mind you !!).

We have a Royal Monmouth Light Infantry Officer Hobnail Helmet Plate c.1855 - 1861.

Monmouthshire Rifle Volunteer Officer Pouch Belt Plate H/M for 1865 by Robert Garrard (even the nuts are stamped with the passant lion).

Jonathan

Default Another Australian family badge

I am doing really well with my 1911-25 Australian Compulsory Training numerals, this time number 19 worn by an old uncle whose Senior Cadet photo has been in the family since 1914. I wrote about finding my father's numeral 32 numeral in post 37.
Area 19 was on the northern outskirts of Sydney close to where I now live. My uncle is carrying a BSA .310 calibre Martini cadet rifle, of which thousands were required to arm the large number of cadets.
After compulsory training lapsed in the 1920s, these rifles remained in the Q store until 1942. Australia had sent 30,000 Lee Enfields to Britain after Dunkirk, the 2nd AIF was in North Africa and Singapore, and ex-cadet rifles were all that were available to arm the Volunteer Defence Corps (Australia's Home Guard) when Japanese invasion was imminent. The VDC would not have delayed any invaders for long.
My uncle died in 1997 (aged 98) and my mother had told me that he had spent a couple of weeks in detention for missing his compulsory drills. I attempted to question him about it but he would not discuss it at all. They really enforced compulsion and probably gave him a hard time because he had a German name.

This is one of my favorite threads each year as I love seeing what gems other collectors have gotten for their collections. I know well what it is like to find something and get it, that you been looking for!

I have been very blessed this year, and picked up more than a few really wanted items. I also have to thank those who gave me a heads up on a listing, or those who offered me a badge and especially those who very kindly sent me some treasure. ALL are genuinely appreciated.

Here are some of my top additions!!!

Default Best of 2023 - First Armoured Carrier

I've been fortunate to pick up some lovely badges in "23 but the best for me was this humble shoulder title to the 1st Armoured Carrier Regiment. Super hard to find and even better with the captured camo stiffener.

Cheers,

Greg
