Mechanical Transport Special Reserve
A new buy which I have been watching on ebay for what seems like years, but the seller has kindly done a deal on.
The Royal Arms is imposed on an 8 spoked steering? wheel and I have seen a larger version of this at an antiques fair in the form of a vehicle badge, although I can't remember the wording around the rim and at the time I wasn't convinced of its authenticity. Is this anything to do with the pre or post WW1 Subsidy Scheme for Military approved civilian lorries signed up for pottential mobilisation or something else? Subsidised by the war department
I have found a nice vehicle badge marked "Subsidised by the war department" with the same Royal Arms on a steering wheel design as the previously mentioned lapel badge, which I believe dates to just prior to WW1, its 4 1/8 inches across and the central device is a similar size to the large WW1 slidered cap badge.

Subsidised by the war department
I think this was fixed to a car which was used by the Army Motor Reserve, a unit formed by car owners around 1912 and disbanded just prior to the Great War.
The owners were generally officers and the drivers their chauffeurs in civillian life. Rob |

The vehicle badge is probably from the Lorry Subsidy scheme
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_Office_Subsidy_Scheme The lapel badge is still to be clarified. Rob |
