RN Commando WW2 Equipment?
Hi all. I generally consider myself reasonably knowledgeable on the subject of Royal Naval Commandos from their creation in WW2 to the modern day, however there is an issue I would like to seek guidance on , if anybody has a definitive answer?
I am putting together a display showing the uniform, insignia and equipment used by a typical Royal Navy Commando rating of both WW2 (of around the D Day period) and the 1982 Falklands conflict. I would like to know, what pattern service respirator was carried by a rating commando on D Day? Was it the naval pattern with the extra long tube (so it could be worn slung over the shoulder and worn with the haversack to the back by gunnery crews) or the version with the shorter tube worn with the haversack on the chest, or would they have been issued with the type of respirator with the canister on the side and carried in a small canvas bag on the webbing? Anyone know? Regards Tony |

For D-Day the land and airborne forces used the lightweight pattern respirator:
