Could it be 2nd Punjab Cavalry? I've checked Ashok Nath's book Izzat - and it's not illustrated - but they only had that title from 1901 > 1903 - So it could be a very rare piece - or I could be totally wrong. I assume that the lower part of the C has broken off?

This is shown as a slouch hat badge for the Cape Police District 2 (Griqualand West) worn prior to 1902. (Owen C.R., 1990, The Military Badges and insignia of Southern Africa. Chimperie, Somerset West, S.A.). Hope this helps Graham
