Princess Mary 1914 Tin
I just acquired a nice little piece of history and thought I'd share it with the forum. Often you see these tins with medals and badges inside but seldom see a tin with all its original contents. Included in the tin are two packets of smokes, 1 packet of tobacco, 1914 Christmas / New Year message from Princess Mary including a photo of the young Princess. A nice surprise was finding another Christmas / New Year message for 1915 in the tin as well.

Princess Mary tins
I read somewhere that a box or crate of these Princess Mary tins was found intact and obviously undelivered, maybe these are now on the collectors market.

Thanks for the replies. Unknown about more of these turning up but the addition of the 1915 card lends me to believe this box stayed with the soldier as a keepsake from the War.

I dont want to appear a killjoy but for the sake of correctness I have to tell you that the contents are not as they originally were.
The tobacco is not an original 'box' item and the extra packet of cigs isnt either. There are lots of websites showing original contents and the various mixtures that could be had for you to peruse. regards

I think the only contents of the tin was the pencil mounted on a piece of cardboard and probably the card and picture as the x-ray photo on the DNW page shews, you then had to go to a table and choose which other item(s) you wanted which could be from a lot of items available or not as the case may be.

My tin has a packet of cigarettes and another of tobacco. Both looking like the yellow packet of cigarettes you have. The tobacco saying "tobacco" instead of "cigarettes".

Thanks for all the comments and help in referring to other sites.
Very interesting to hear about the variety that could go into these tins and am interested to find out if anything, bar the small message, was given to the soldiers in subsequent years. Paul |

A fellow member of the CMHS is writing a book on these tins as he has a very large collection of them..... Including a Sterling Silver one that was presented to an Indian Raj....... He has most of the different contents, the candy, chocolate, tobacco etc. the one he is missing is the cooking spices...... I understand that they were given out for 3 years...... A large amount of the materials to make them went down on the Lusitanian.....

I think they were ultimately sold off in 2014 at £300 each.

I've seen and handled one as have a couple of members here, the contents were the silver tipped pencil made by Mappin and Webb on a securing card, two prayer cards and small greeting card in envelope with the Princess Mary's monogram. I believe if you were a smoker you were handed cigarettes or tobacco if not you were given chocolate both separately and they would easily fit in the tin, It was also with the cardboard box which I think enhanced the value. it was on offer and sold for less than £300.

Hello Paul,
I remember I had read that in the Daily Mail, there was a picture of Emma Kitchener after they were subsequently resold the carton was opened and I think it was the particular saleroom that had or was about to offer them at £300 each, not that you would want to pay that amount. I always thought the silver pencil tips were made and the cases engraved, by Asprey, were they actually done by Mappin and Webb? Regards Frank |
