Civil Defence County & Town Titles
I bought this lot last year, it came together but that doesn't mean very much. I'm puzzled by the shape of the Plymouth title, I think its the only "area" designation I have seen in this shape. Maybe its not Civil Defence at all?

Here is the common shape which I had assumed to be only from the post 1949 period but now having seen a "Torbay" in use during the war without the yellow edging I'm beginning to wonder?

Rob, im pretty sure there is at least one other area title that is curved that way as well, will have to check when i get home tonight. I assume this may be from before area titles became standardized.
I dont come on this site very often, but im curious to find out what you have for spares, i should get back to work on this very neglected area of my collecting and would be interested to make some trades! Would you kindly email me at your leisure? Jonnynation@yahoo.com thx, sean |

Although the official instructions on CD Area markings stipulated that they should be worn below the breast badge the design was left to the local authority, hence examples with and without borders.
As local authorities were prone to acting in defiance of central instructions it is quite possible that downward curved badges like the one shown were worn - although not widely. Jon |

Thank you for the replies, I did wonder if there was some other sort of uniform such as a greatcoat that may have warranted a different shape but it would seem not.
It would be interesting to see what other areas did exist in this shape and the time period, WW2 or post 1949? Rob |

Rob, nothing to do with titles and apology in advance for being pedantic but I notice, in your frame in post 2, that the St. John first aid sleeve badge is upside down. No offence intended.

No offence taken, but you could be right, it sort of depends on where you start reading it.
