A very useful thread - highlighting numerous variations. It is quite likely that some veterans would not wear their original badge at reunions for fear of losing it ... adding to difficulties of analysis based purely on images. Always useful to share thoughts, with some useful points raised throughout - without giving vital information to fakers.

Any thoughts on an unnumbered badge made by Arthus Bertrand? Copy of a copy?

Arthus Bertrand Paris produced the modern badge for French commandos from the 50s to the 70s.
As Paul said, they issued a 'commemorative' of the '1er BFM Commando' in 1974 (with one anchor and one star as per the original design by M. Chauvet) but based on the mold they used for the 'Commando Marine' version. This design is very far from the WW2 version. Actually, the one on EBay is probably one of the few originals of the 1974 batch. |

If it helps - I have a version of the commemorative with star amongst my examples. As Pierre mantions - I have not seen many of these, based on the original/rejected design. Thanks to Paul (Belly) for photography.

An ugly fake beret but the badge is one of these copies made by Gaunt. This seller just sold a fake para beret for a significant pile of money! Cheers Pierre |

I know, it is crazy!
I was recently offered a similar badge for £220 (I declined). The trouble is some people in the collector's community are convinced these badges were issued to the 1st BFM in 1944 whereas I believe they were produced after the war for collectors and veterans. The point we discussed extensively with Paul (Belly) is whether or not JR Gaunt was the maker with the mold used for the original WW2 original 400 badges. |

Yes J-B - The very one Paul pointed out in his post of 21 November (post 38 above) - now up to £310 - It is a good job there is a return option - but it shows people bid without doing their homework.

Fake Free French Cdo Beret
This is unbelievable: The French commando beret sold for 620GBP after several bidders were apparently convinced the whole thing was genuine.
The beret itself has been grossly faked: - As per Steve from his very useful thread on berets on this forum, ‘The makers stamp on the BRITISH BERET BASQUE LTD ( BASQUE ) stayed the same for the post war ones and consists of the name , date & arrow printed on the cloth with a series of 8 dots around the outer diamond’. Here we have the arrow immediately below the maker’s name followed by the date, double dashed line similar to Kangol but not to be found on BASQUE berets and no dots (see photo) - The leather band, as noted by Steve, is ‘thinner than the other makers’ with you don’t see here. Also, you can see the particular stitching that is typical with berets made in the 60s which is confirmed by traces of the pocket for badge slider (see photo) - Last but not least, the army number with 8 digits doesn’t correspond at all with the numbering system adopted by the Free French Army during WW2 (the battalion was composed of a mix of soldiers and sailors) The badge is not an original but a very good example of the ‘made in England’ version that was discussed at length on this thread. It is absolutely disgusting to see that people are still wasting their money with this particular vendor. |
