Default London Transport Button

A 23mm London Transport button with screw thread and base.

What is its purpose? Who wore it?

I have seen similar buttons on Household Cavalry uniform for their thick bullion aiguillettes.

I am most grateful for any suggestions...

Thank you for looking, Keith

Possibly worn on each side of the cap to secure the bull strap.

Thank you both for your input.

The button size is too large for a cap strap.

I don't believe London Transport (bus, tram, trollybus, rail, etc.) personnel wore shoulder boards on their uniform, but London Transport Police did wear shoulder boards so the button is probably LT Police.

Any other suggestions?...

London Transport Police wore epaulettes on tunics and on greatcoats. However, these were sewn on in a similar manner to other police forces. If you've discounted use on a cap then I'm unable to suggest anything else.

Buttons with screw threads are usually fitted to threaded brass posts which are sewn on the shoulders of ceremonial jackets and frock coats. They are intended to hold shoulder boards which can be made of twisted cord and be up to 15-20 mm thick.

Is it possible that your button was made for the ceremonial uniform of a senior London Transport Official or London Transport Police Officer?

Tim thank you for the input.

You may be right, London Transport also had a band who may have worn ceremonial type uniforms.

Problem solved courtesy of a couple of London Transport experts.

The screw-post buttons were for mounting the leather backing to a Bell punch on the jacket. This required a more secure fixing.

The Bell punch ticket machine was in use with the London Passenger Transport Board by conductors on the board's trams, trolleybuses, and buses between 1933 and 1958.
