Scottish Independence
What do you guys think of Scottish independence?
Good/bad? As an Aussie, I'm just keen to know what you guys in the UK think about this. Do you also think it would see a resurgence of Scottish regiments if it gained independence? Mick

I don't think that the Canadians are too keen on it, or maybe just the Canadian that wrote this:

Threat of Scottish invasions
Only way to stop a new round of Scottish invasions might be to either put barbed-wire along Hadrian's Wall or build a line of pubs.

I doubt very much if there's be areurgence of Scottish regiments as that will cost money and no matter what the Yes voters say there's going to be a shortage for a while. I did read however that they planned to raise companies and give them old Regimental titles.

What gets me is the fact that the Scots can have this vote to break up the Union....... yet the United Kingdom (as it stands) is not allowed the referendum on Europe.
The Scots really do need to think about the ££££s, UK bailed out two Scottish banks with tax payers money. If the Scots get "their Freedom" they will have to take their fair burden of the national debt...... therefore "I promise to pay the bearer of this note" on their fiat currency will be severely weakened right from the get go.

Having been a born Scot now of 72 years, and longer than Alex Salmond many people are amazed that I do not have a vote in this. Why ? because after serving 25 years in the British Army circumstances lead me to settle at my last posting in England. What is most annoying is that students from outside Scotland who are studying there can vote, also 16 year olds and anybody else who is not a born Scot. I personally think it is illegal.

Quote:
I said the same on another site. One has to look back at how and why the Scots ended up in the Union. In I believe 1699 they, the Scots when independent chose to drop the vast majority of their liquid cash in the Darien Scheme (something like the mortgage nonsense we had), then it crashed. They were forced to accept the act of Union mostly in part to that cash flow situation. Now, in 2007-8 we had the big crash, and low and behold what did her Majesties government do, bail out RSB and a few others over the border. I doubt very much they could have weathered that without England's check book. They would have been in the same state of affairs -bankrupt. Just like in 1707. This is just one example on how weak they will be post separation. No membership of the EU and the Euro, and no Pound. If it wasn't for us, we'd have had Greece over the border by 2010. If they want to join the nations that no one cares what they have to say, be my guest. I'll leave this subject with my final thoughts. I think it is a disgrace that the three numpties from London have scurried north to promise the world if they stay. How will that look post a NO vote to the North of England, suffering the same supposedly terrible depravations as the Scots. A little unfair don't you think. Also, why were not the rest of nation given the option to decide if we would like them to stay. But their again, will we ever get a chance to decide anything. I mean look at the EU question. I'm depending of Farage for that. At least if they leave the labour will have no chance of another Government for a generation, and Farage will, I hope be the deciding factor. At least then I won;t see on the crime show's, eastern Europeans running smoke and getting community service for their crimes. I wounded if they go, will the border be as secure as the channel isn't I can just imagine with their Scottish Defence Force, will they be able to maintain their border controls eliminating another route into the UK to receive a free for all with our generous welfare system. Regards to all Simon. |

I'm keenly awaiting the referendum outcome.
As an outsider, I think its best for all parties for the UK to remain intact. Why break a system that has been working well all these years? The Scots could end up much worse under their own National leadership. United we stand - divided we fall? Mick

I think it will be a no vote.... but only just.... and Westminster will breath a big sigh of relief. The Scots will gain out of this .... more autonomy etc....
If it is a yes vote..... then I am not sure about their future..... will they be swapping Westminster for Brussels probably within 20 years.... another master by a different name. One things for certain ....David "Cameron" will not be getting a Knighthood from E2R Scotland be careful what you wish for..... it might come true!? Would this be the new Union Flag?

Funny how for centuries Scotsmen have been leaving the country of their birth in large numbers for exotic places like London, Liverpool, Newcastle as well as to the country's of the former British Empire and now because of revenue from oil ( which no one knows how long it will last ) a couple of " fishy" chancers are spending an absolute fortune on a Referendum the result of which seems at the moment to be on a knife edge.
There are still so many unresolved issues that will arise if there is a Yes vote that I don't think anyone who is eligible to vote can yet make an informed decision. Will express trains on the West Coast main line stop at the border for customs formalities ? ( joke ) but does the SNP have a policy on immigration ? P.B. P.S. if it were not for Scotsmen leaving Scotland in the past I would not be here writing this now.

This is on the BBC News website:
After a Yes vote The Scottish government argues immigration policy agreed at Westminster does not suit Scotland's needs, pledging to take in more refugees and to "welcome people who want to come to work and live in Scotland". It has pledged: The Scottish borders would remain open to all EU nationals, as it would be an EU member. A Scottish Asylum Agency would be established to oversee applications. Dungavel Detention Centre in Lanarkshire would be closed and dawn raids would be ended. British citizens resident in Scotland would be Scottish citizens. Citizenship by descent would be available to those whose parent or grandparent qualifies for Scottish citizenship. Dual citizenship with the UK would be permitted. UK passports would be recognised until they expiry. line I wonder how many of those currently trying to get into the UK illegally from France would head for Scotland if it became independent ? P.B.

The thing that angers me is; I am Scottish born and bred, my son, mother, sister and extended family live there. But, as I am a British Serviceman with 31 years service and currently a home owner in England, I have no vote
I won't comment on any other issues for or against independance as my opinion, and those of a couple of thousand other servicemen not registered to vote in Scotland, obviously doesn't matter to the Big Fish up in cloud cuckoo land. Regards, Bill

I hope the Scots stay, if they leave it will be like going through a divorce. I also think we are good together, much greater than the sum of the parts.
I don't think the Scots, being better educated than the English, would be crazy enough to vote to go anyway. Would you vote to give up a free university education for you, your kids or your grandkids? Still, if I am wrong, and they do go, good luck to them. Somebody has mentioned the Darien Venture. Am I to assume that the Scots will give back the Darien money? When we joined together England paid off the Scottish national debt, the place was bankrupt. The least they can do after breaking up the Union, without consulting the English people, would be to pay off the English national debt.
