Hi David,

Thanks for that, yes it appears to be silver plated, so I was thinking officers. The size is very small at a diameter of 12.36mm (½ inch give or take).

I noted the back had no makers mark, does this make it especially rare?

Cheers, Roy.

Unusual for an Officers button of that period but not "rare" in the sense of being more valuable. Actually, I thought it was a larger size, it's not really that unusual for small size buttons to not have a maker's details - not enough space probably.

Backmarks are more of an aid to dating a button, they don't usually have much bearing on value.

Hi David,

Thank you for that. Just to clarify - I'm not especially interested in rarity for value more just for interest, love finding little gems. I have a similar button to this one on the way that is maker marked, so I will be keen to compare to two. Also have a rather early button due in any day, so quite excited about that too.

At this small size would this still be a tunic button? I wondered if it might be for cuffs or collars or some such area?

Cheers, Roy.

Hi Roy

That size - possibly tunic cuff. In a later period it might be classed as a cap button but unlikely to be wearing caps at that time.

Sounds like you are suffering from button addiction already - not good!

David

Thanks David,

That makes sense.

Yes I know, it's all a little too much.. But I love that you can find such great pieces of early history for not much money too.

Although I have noticed one problem with these little buttons, in that they are easily lost...I answered the phone yesterday and then turned around and for the life of me couldn't find that little half-inch silver button... Well it turned up next to the camera but it got my attention that one needs to be careful where one puts these down.

I was all 'un-buttoned' for a few moments...

Cheers, Roy.
