Three Unknown Buttons?
Hi all!
Have these three buttons I can't identify so any help appreciated? First is what I think may be a Volunteer Rifles button but of what unit I don't know? Other two are detecting finds, may be military or may not so not sure if anyone will recognise them? Thanks, Phil |

Thanks Bill! This looks a great forum from the posts I've been looking at and I'm happy to have become a member.

Please state beforehand if it is your intention to sell these buttons.

Yes it is to be honest, is there a forum rule against asking if I am?

"If you plan on using the Forum membership to identify, date, or collect information to enhance the desirability of an item that you intend to sell, then please say so in your first post on the subject". People get upset (and rightly so in my view) if they spend valuable time and effort identifying an item (and sometimes giving a value) only to find that it turns up on ebay for sale a day or so later. You might be surprised how often this happens and not only with 'just-joined' members. Much better to be upfront about it and you will find most people will still help! |

That's fine with me as I don't won't to upset people and didn't realise they're was a rule so thanks for letting me know. Unless its one of my own finds everything I post will be bits I'm looking to sell on my eBay account.

Spotted a button on eBay yesterday for the Nottingham Gas Department that has the same crest on as my second button so it's got something to do with Nottingham if it helps!

Hello Phil
For what it's worth, I don't think your buttons 2 and 3 are military; 2 is most likely livery in its widest sense (household, local authority, that sort of thing) and I think the third may also be municipal of some type. Nothing to back that up though, I just can't think of any likely military candidate! I can't make out the first initial(s) on the first button, so something Rifle Volunteers is a good bet. To me the button has a slightly colonial look, Indian Auxiliary Force, for example, the style of crown, scalloped edge, just the general appearance really. Anyone good at deciphering script lettering? Roger |

Hi Chaps
I agree with Roger. Not sure about "3", "2" looks like civic livery to me. The first one, I think I've seen before somewhere but can't remember where or what it is. Colonial Rifle Vols sounds like a good bet although I wonder why it would be excavated over here? Buttons have a habit of turning up in strange places though. David PS.... I would say "1" is "MRV" but I'm not good at deciphering script. Last edited by davidwyke; 12-12-15 at 12:31 PM. |

Thanks for your help guys. With the scalloped edge my thinking was the button was late 1800s in date but I was confused by the crown as it defiantly isn't a QVC. I too am not great at deciphering monogrammed lettering but it seems to be ?RV. My thoughts on the first letter were W or M but for all I know it could even be two letters together perhaps? Number three button I thought maybe was of a brigade but have no idea if I'm anywhere close with this guess!

Hi
Crown on "1" is an "Imperial" crown, that's what I call it anyway. Used from late 1870's in place of the "royal" crown. Mostly, but not always, used late Victorian period. More usually associated with India (when it was used on some buttons right up to 1947) but used on other (mostly colonial) buttons also. At a guess, I would say the button is around 1880's/1890's. I think "M.......Rifle Volunteers" is possibly what it is but not sure and there are lots of possible "M"'s to go at if it is! David Last edited by davidwyke; 12-12-15 at 02:06 PM. |
