Default Button For The Naval Experts!

Me again!

Does anyone know what this button actually is or is it still unidentified? Seen a few before on eBay and had one myself I while back but just sold it as unidentified British Naval. Have spotted another one in a lot of buttons I've been offered so would like to know what it is this time if possible?

Thanks all,

Phil

I believe they are Napoleonic period coastal artillery garrison buttons.

That'll do me, it's better than unidentified unless anyone else has anything to offer?

It is possible it was for the senior gunner warrant (petty) officer as these bear similarities to other types such as for pursers and surgeons which were recently appearing to gain their own buttons.

The RN rarely manned artillery pieces off shop directly, usually the RM or infantry/artillery got the job.
Interestingly the actual artillery still belonged to the Board of Ordinance, even on ships, but the crewing was outside of their role.

Anyone have Tim Burt's book on naval buttons? I've seen it in there! Definitely not Coastal Artillery. Seems to me, "Transport" rings a bell. DJ.

The first picture I put on the thread is from his book I think as you can look at it online http://www.scribd.com/doc/512437/But...sh-Navy#scribd
