I assume that you know that they were Mounted Infantry? The demand for Troops in 1900 saw a number of 'composite' units drawn from volunteers from the Volunteer and Militia battalions. As the VBs were Home Defence only the VBs were not liable for overseas service without volunteering. These were often of company strength. Several regiments had additional battalions raised for the duration of the war. These included MI Bns which were used to supplement Yeomanry and Cavalry units where horses were needed to cover the veldt. See here for a similar Kings unit http://www.9thkings.co.uk/BoerWar.html Alan |

Hi Alan,
thanks the input, the link onto the Newspaper reports is particularly helpful. This fills in a lot of gaps I was aware they were Mounted Infantry. regards, Iain Quote:

I think ( but may well be wrong ) that this photo has been the subject of a thread here some time ago.
Will continue to try and find the thread. P.B.

The officer on the right in the part of the picture I posted is from the 2nd V.B. KLR, still looking for the earlier thread, I think the picture is of the 3rd contingent of Liverpool volunteers going to South Africa

Thanks Alan,
No wonder I couldn’t find it but it does show that my memory, whilst not being what it was, has not gone completely. Peter
