Default Colonial Police "S.O.II" rank?

Good evening

On the Card of Appointment for the Tripolitania Police Norman Stark's rank is given as "S.O.II", presumably the Colonial Police were organised similar to the Civil Service 'rank' structure so I'm guessing SOII is "Superintending Officer II"? But what does that mean in layman's terms? Superintendent? Chief Superintendent?

As always any suggestions will be gratefully recived.

Thanks for looking

Graham

Graham,

Can't comment specifically on the Tripolitania Police. However, prior to the mid 1970's (approx.) here in England & Wales, there were two grades of Superintendent. Supt. I and Supt. II.

Those of Supt.I were Deputy Divisional Commanders (Below Chief Superintendent). Those graded Supt.II commanded Sub-Divisions and some HQ Departments.

Going back to the small Borough Forces, which existed prior to 1969, in many cases a Supt. I, held the additional rank of Deputy Chief Constable.

Perhaps Tripolitania followed a similar system.

Dave.
