Default WW1 Australian Machine Gun Companies

The attached felt badges are those worn by 6th Machine Gun Company AIF from 1916. Can anyone kindly advise if the yellow felt version of the crossed machine guns was replaced by the metal version during the war?

The twenty Machine Gun Companies were reorganised into five Battalions in 1918 and I believe that members of the new Battalions continued to wear the yellow felt version. This might suggest that the metal version was never adopted by Australian units but I would welcome any advice/

Many thanks

Nick
