Military Museum Auction
Upcoming auction of Hassett's Military Museum at Uralla.
Seems to have a wide variety of all things military. http://gdlauctions.com.au/ |

Some interesting items but I guess you have to be there. So many items are very poorly described. What do you get and how do you arrive at a bid if you wanted a "quantity of badges" in a bag.
Was this a private museum? I Man |

It used to be quite a good museum - visited there a few years ago but it's been closed in recent years.

It looks as though they had a bit of reasonable gear there. A pity the auctioneer has not descibed it better.
I would be a bit disappointed if it was a private museum. The auction blurb indicates that many of the items were sourced from families in the New England area. I imagine that much of it would have been donated by well meaning people so as to establish an attraction in their area. Who gets the quid now that it is all being flogged off? I Man |

There is one item there that is quite sad.
The uniform belonging to the late Kerry Slaven (1st Armoured Regiment) - a good mate of mine was his crew commander and (Tp Leader) and went he went on leave Kerry was acting crew commander (South Vietnam - circa 1968/69 from memory) in a Centurion Tank. He was in the turret manning his .30 cal machine gun during a contact with Viet Cong when it got hit by an RPG! He survived but suffered terrible wounds which ultimately caused his kidneys to shutdown. He died in 1988 when he refused dialysis - a terrible way to go but from what I heard he was a top bloke and a credit to the Royal Australian Armoured Corps. One of many interesting items in that museum. Might be tempted to drive there from Sydney and have a bid. Mick

It is possible to register as an absentee bidder as per link on the site.
We would love to go there for the auction, however we can't make it on the day. Just wondering what will happen with items that don't sell. |

Went to the auction yesterday!
Lots of people with quite a few bidding silly amounts on some good stuff but also a lot of junk! Some of the prices were just jaw dropping - $1450 for a pair if Aussie WW1 Artillery colour patches with Anzac 'A's for example (plus premium). A lot of 5 incomplete non military Kukris went for $950! Lots of dealers there as well. And I scored a hidden gem missed my everyone else! Picked up a very nice Charge of Beersheba framed print. Mick

My son went to the auction, he flew over and stayed over night across the road from the museum that worked out ok. He had the same opinion as slick mick, some of the uniforms were full of moth holes, and some of the flags had been placed near the windows and were faded. Some of the locals were very upset as they had donated medals etc to the museum. Some of the gear went for silly prices.

That's the sort of thing that would have bothered me as mentioned in my earlier post. If I had been a donor I, too, would have been very concerned as to where the proceeds were going. I am pleased that a couple of members managed to get there so that we get a bit of a run down on the gear, condition and prices. I guess you missed out on Kerry Slaven's uniform, Mick, but that stable belt sounds nice. Was it worthwhile for your son, Terry? Donny B. |

Hi Donny,
Wrong digger - it's actually Phil Barwick (i got it wrong before) but I suspect the uniform was handed back to the family as it wasn't there. Not 100% sure but I think that the proceeds may be going towards paying for the owner's cancer treatment. I'm still recovering from the trip LOL! 12hrs on the road in one day is a lot of driving!
