Default Irish Guards - or Middlesex Yeomanry?

Just bought this photo from a well-known auction site where it was listed as Irish Guards.

Althought he is clearly wearing a star cap I think it is that of the Middlesex Yeomanry and not that of the Irish Guards. No Irish Guards Bn served in the armoured role which would have entitled them to a black beret. Although the KD shirt suggests Middle East or Italy where the Irish Gds 1st Bn served from Dec 1943 until April 1944 they did not serve in an Armoured role.

The Middlesex Yeomanry served as Royal Signals throughout the war wearing their regimental cap badge, latterly as the 9th Armoured Brigade's Signal Squadron in Italy from May 1944 to August 1945. It was not uncommon for units attached to armoured formations to wear black berets so I suspect this is a Yeomanry photo and not Guards.

Comments please.
