Lewis Gun badge
I have seen 2 different types of Lewis gun badge and wondering why the difference ? Would the Australian version be the same as the British? Sorry about one photo being upside down.

Jack,
There are multiple different metal versions that were used, one piece, 2 piece, large letters, small letters, curly letters, gilding metal, white metal etc. However the gothic type you show first is Australian and not British. regards

The Old English script badge is post Great War Australian manufacture and issue. During the Great War the badge worn by Australians [AIF Order 787 of 7 Aug 17] was exactly the same as the British badge and supplied through the British system.

The Australian post-WW1 LG badge is photo 1. This appeared in brass, whitemetal, and oxidised copper (blackened). Although it is authorised in Standing Orders for Clothing, Part 3, 1922, it is not listed in PVCN 1922-23 and must have appeared after that time. It was certainly in PVCNs in 1926.
Photo 2 is the British pattern badge, which as Simon points out came in a multitude of variations. The gold embroidered on blue cloth badge in Cossum's book did not appear until the 1930s (circa 1934) and might have been restricted to the Permanent Forces. Keith |
