Default 1 Batt Royal Anglian

hi all, see this photo, well is that a IX on the backpack, like the homeguard numbers, or is it an X in subdued colours and the velco edge looking like a 1, or is it a plastic buckle.
Your ideas please.

It looks like a IX to me.

I appreciate it could represent IX Foot/Norfolk Regt etc but could it be IX Coy Welsh Guards as well?

Ivan

From Wikipedia (Not the most reliable source, but I was going for quick and dirty):

"The Royal Norfolks were amalgamated in 1959 with their neighbours, the Suffolk Regiment, to become part of the 1st East Anglian Regiment; this in turn became part of the Royal Anglian Regiment, of which "A" Company of the first battalion is known as the "Royal Norfolk"."

Surely C company would follow convention with X Lincolnshire the old 10th of Foot. Is it not the senior regiment of the composite - this I don't know to be honest.

Just a thought, cheers Dean.

The system may be based on the 1959 amalgamations, taking those as precedence, the 1st East Anglian Regt being the R Norfok and Suffolk amalgamation, The R Lincolnshire amalgamating into the 2nd?
I think "Cambridgeshire" was added to R Anglian Regt sub titles some years ago, so would a reference to the Cambs now feature as a 1 R Anglian company designator?

The lineage of the Royal Anglian Regiment is complex british-army-units1945on.co.uk is a decent link. The 2nd Battalion (The Poachers) is an interest of mine but I was a mile wide regarding company lineage and naming. They are from 1st Battalion 2nd East Anglian Regiment.

Cheers Dean
