Why do we collect?
I started with the two posters " All the signs of a specialist 1 & 2. As I was in the Royal Engineers I started to collect them and as I was based in BAOR I started to collect Bundeswehr then womens, schools etc etc. This stopped a few years ago when I had 85% of my collection stolen and never seen again. I can always start again.... Jerry

Why do we collect
Why was there a Sphynx on a badge. Why did the Gloucesters have a badge at the back. Why did the Welsh/Welch regiment have that little piece of back at the back on their collars. Why was this badge WM and that BIM. Why do they wear a lanyard. Why is that one a different colour. Why is that Scots regiment guy wearing trews and not a kilt. Why did the Gloucesters wear the CMO patch on their uniform. Where did the small horse come from on the 5DG badge. What was that medal for. Why do you wear a cloth cap badge and everyone else wears a metal one. What is that red W/black Cat/ aircraft doing on your arm. Having all my cloth insignia from the 50's and 60's stolen was worse than breaking up with my very first girlfriend. What can I say. Once bitten, forever smitten.
I am sure I could give it up. Really.... No, I like it too much. |

I collect because badges because they look nice . You can have boxes full of WW1 medals; they all look the same. When you put badges in a frame or on a board it attracts the attention of most people, even those that know nothing about them.
My collecting story started when I just turned 3 I think. Dad used to push me up to militaria dealers stalls and the dealers used to find me funny because I`d join in the conversation. I must of been nearly 4 when a dealer gave me a broken Wandsworth Pals cap badge to shut me up that was my first badge. Its nice to have a collection but to have no one to them pass onto, thats my big worry. There are just some things I could never sell, not just family items but items that old boys have given to me that I could never part with. I hear Adam H already has that one in the bag, hope I can follow in his footsteps soon.

I can also add that you can never never, in my experience,be a collector and a dealer at the same time. You will always find a badge that you don't have with something different on it or a different finish etc etc. Then, when you finally decide to let go of one or two or three you just can't because.....well because.....too nice,it was bought twenty years ago, or came from a friend, or bought in that fea market that you had to drive two hours to go to. And also the BUG.

Well the reason why i collect is fairly simple.I collect because i want to remember and honor and save a little piece of history from the men and women who have libarated my town and country from nazi occupation so that my children will know what they've done for us.And because the badges and titles are fricking good looking

Not forget
the best reason for collecting badges is to remember the great regiments of the British Army who thanks to the B---dy politicians are now no more

I've always been interested in the Canadian army. I had a few pieces of webbing kicking around... mostly for hunting... and then I went to a garage sale and picked up a tunic, pants and a great coat. That led to more tunics, webbing, helmets and then it happened.... a friend of mine said he knew a person with some medals for sale and would I be interested.. I said sure and met the fellow... no medals for sale at that time but he did have some badges... (50 british and 50 canadian) I bought them and was immediately hooked... I enjoy the hobby immensely and only wish I had started 20 years earlier.... PS... I did get to pick up the medals eventually but am resisting going in that direction!
