Hello Ray, I will try to answer this. The 19th Alberta Dragoons was the first unit with the badge introduced in 1927, Mazeas C.31. Then there was a name change to the 19th Edmonton Fusiliers RCAC in 1946, Mazeas C.58, with the horse's tail being made hanging down. The same pattern was kept when there was another name change to the 19th Alberta Regiment RCAC, Mazeas C.59, in 1949. This unit finally disbanded 31 March 1965.
So my guess, name changed, badge changed at least once. Hoping this helps. Jo

No. That change came in recent years, I mean since WW2, there are two pattern 19th Alberta Dragoons , One with the tail raised more than the other.
I've only one now so I can't show you them both but you can see a picture of the other with the tail raised somewhat & also the head is streched out more, also the left hind leg is back or behind the right one in Stewarts book.. Here is also a page from the Queens printer book called The Regiments & Corps of the Canadian Army it was printed in 1964 & cost $5.00. The image is the same as Stewart has in his book The Concise Linages of the Canadian Army. I'm wondering if I have a WW1 badge in my WW2 collection it is quite concave, looking at it from the back, the others are quite flat. |

Clarification? The 19th Alberta Dragoons was originally raised as the 19th Alberta Mounted Rifles in 1908. Then, they were redesignated the 19th Alberta Dragoons on January 3, 1911. Mazeas Pre-1914 shows only the 19th Alberta Mounted Rifles badges, but the unit must have had the Dragoon pattern by WW1. All the WW1 references show the 19th Alberta Dragoons badge as the CEF pattern.
Now, if the Mazeas 20-50 book shows the 19th Dragoons pattern as being authorized in 1927, are we seeing an after the fact authorization? Or, is there something missing from the Mazeas books? |

Bill, am I right in saying that some of these so called CEf bn's were parent Regiments & not cef. for example, RCD's Ft Garry Horse, 19th Alberta Dragoons,6th Duke of Connaughts, Gordons, Ld Strat. 1st hussars, 16th Lt Horse etc, etc,

Hi Ray, Yes some CEF units wore the parent regiment's badges. The ones that come to mind off the top of my head are the 19th Alberta Dragoons, RCD's, LdSH, Fort Garry's, 1st Hussars, 16th Canadian Light Horse, and the RNWMP and the only infantry one the RCR's. (The PPCLI aren't included because they were war formed.)
The Gordons? 50th Regiment? |

19th AB Dragoons website
A link to an interesting website on the regiment's history that has a nice page on badges and insignia including sketches from William Scully.
The 19th Alberta Dragoons Commemorative Society.

Ref CEF battalions that wore the parent (militia) regiments' badges.
The ones that I am familiar with are the 72nd CEF and 88th CEF. Phil |

Badge for sale on ebay
A nice looking badge for sale today... (no connection to seller). I have noticed a lot of 19th Alberta Dragoons material for sale on eBay as of late.
This seller is referencing a very old collection (1931), "Reverend Edward McGougan"? Anyone here heard of this collection before??

Hi Gents,
An interesting thread and about an interesting badge. Not to stray too far off topic but Bill mentioned the short lived (less than three years) 19th Alberta Mounted Rifles who's badge is very similar to the later Dragoons badge. For interest here is a photograph of my officers version. A super nice badge and one of my favorites. Cheers, Roy.

The raised tail (and skinny horse) appears to be early issue, the lowered tail (and bigger horse) is later issue IMO, the lowered tail style is still issued to the cadet corps.

Some recent finds to this regiment, an officers CEF issue set with a hat button. And two Edmonton Fusiliers cap badges and a flash for the Armoured Car regt.
