Default Cut throat Dragoons

In February of 1914, the Officer Commanding “A” Squadron Royal Canadian Dragoons complained about their new issue of badges:
... the present badge is useless as a collar badge, it being too large, as the top of the badge reaches above the collar and pierces the wearer’s neck.
No response is recorded, but no doubt the spectacle of cut throat Dragoons resulted in changes.

Hi Bill,

A strange set of affairs..

What was the size of the collars? Does someone have an example to share and are they significantly bigger than other unit?

Cheers, Roy.

Hi Roy, Do you have the Mazeas books? They are the standard references for the pre-1914 and 1920-1953 Canadian badges. Both are in need of numerous corrections additions and deletions, but they are the best we have for now.
In the pre-1914 Mazeas book there are large collars listed with the 1895 pattern helmet plate. I believe these are the 1914 pattern collars.

Hi Bill,

I wish I did. Since I became interested in Canadian badge I of course have become aware of these references but they seem darn hard to get hold of. I recently was able to purchase the Charlton CEF book (should be here in a few days) but thus far I have not found a single Mazeas book offered for sale.

If you happen across an example please feel free to drop me a line.

Cheers, Roy.

Hi Roy, we have copies of the Pre '14 Mazeas and the 20-50 Mazeas available for purchase through our website. Click on the "NEW BOOKS" tab in the categories and they should be there.

Hi Jaime,

Many thanks for that - both books just purchased.

Cheers, Roy.

Gents,

I believe this may be the badge of which you speak. It's on p14 of Mazeas 1920-50 and the only example I've seen (so far) is one in the Regimental archives. I've attached a photo of that one for reference purposes. It's approx three times the size of the standard springbok collar badge and the prominent horns might have provoked the 'cutthroat' comment.

Cheers!
