City of London Yeomanry Rough Riders helmet plate: real or reproduction?
Though my primary interest was American airborne units of WWII, in the 1980s and 1990s I also collected the badges of Australian Light Horse units and the Imperial Camel Corps, which led me to acquire badges from some other units of peripheral interest, including the City of London Yeomanry Rough Riders. The item in question, what I call a Rough Riders helmet plate, is one I acquired so long ago that I can no longer recall the circumstances. I've searched online for other examples but found none. I did, however, find a Canadian company that appears to be making and selling quality reproductions of some early helmet plates, though I did not find this among them. I will appreciate any information viewers here might be able to provide. Limitations here on image size made it almost impossible to provide a useful image, so I posted an image of the helmet plate on my website and a link to it. I photographed the front of the plate next to a Rough Riders collar badge as an indicator of the plate's size. Also included is a link to an image of a portion of the back of the plate.

Member Neiblungen will know if these have been electoform copied over the years.
Can you post a picture of the back. The fixings and size of screw posts can be an indicator on authenticity. If genuine the plate will date 1905-08 when the SA honour was granted and Imperial Yeomanry title extant. |

I believe that the Band of the Royal Yeomanry (Inns of Court and City Yeomanry) currently wear this helmet plate in full dress. In use since the early 20th Century it is possible that over the years replacement plates have been made?

Thank you for the link. I'll wager it is one of those being worn by the Band of the Royal Yeomanry.

Very interesting thanks Tim.
Done some Googling and indeed the band of the Royal Yeomanry are wearing this ‘Imperial’ Yeomanry czapka plate, hopefully you can just make it out in this picture. I don’t collect czapka’s so don’t have a copy of Carman and Rowe’s book on the subject. Would anyone know if there was a City of London Yeomanry plate without the Imperial title post-1908 on conversion to TY? It would be interesting to hear from Neib to see if he has any knowledge regarding the production for these plates. Definitely I would agree with Simon that reverse indicates modern. |
