Unknown cloth items- all yellow & black
Following Mike Jackson's Hertfordshire Regt post I thought I would post scans of other yellow and black pieces of cloth that I have yet to positively identify.
a) a printed piece of cloth 72x65mm in size. In the past I've been told this may be Middx Yeomanry (R Signals) related. In real life the yellow is much more mustard than the scan. b) gold over black diamond 50x60mm. It is attached to an old card that purports to identify it as Land Forces Persian Gulf. c) A card marked Hampshire, with a Bedfs & Herts bumble bee flash and an unidentified yellow over black diamond 26x44mm. d) Another card marked Hampshire with a square flash bisected diagonally gold over black, measuring 50x30mm. Observations welcomed. Stephen. |

Two observations:
The formation sign of Land Forces Persian Gulf (LFPG) is the word Khaleej (Gulf) in Arabic in white within a white ring on a red square. The diagonally divided yellow/black flash was worn by 2/4 Hampshires, 128 Inf Bde, 46 Inf Div and also by the same battalion in 43 Inf Div. The same coloured flash, but divided vertically yellow/black was worn by 1/4 Hampshires. Since the Hampshire Regiment also served as Gunners (59 ATk Regt, 69 ATk Regt and 503 Coast Regt - there were probably other variations on the yellow/black theme. 147 Regt RAC (ex 10 Hampshires) wore a red/yellow rose on a black square as a unit flash. A few more on the Hampshires theme:
The combination was worn by 2/4 Hampshires in 28 Inf Bde, 4 Inf Div in Italy from Apr 44 and Greece from Dec 44. The two square flashes are unidentified. MIke Hampshire_Various.01.jpgHampshire_2.4 Hants, 28 Inf Bde from Apr 44.jpg |
