Interpreting Royal Navy Service Record
Off topic, but was hoping some one could shed some light on the Royal Navy service record.
Why is HMS Bulldog in brackets and ditto through out other ships? As is HMS Wishart? Cannot identify the ship next to Wishart. Thank you. Last edited by KOMalta; 27-02-23 at 11:37 PM. |

Maybe HMS Colossus?

I agree with John, HMS Colossus looks pretty close. How about HMS Gloucester, as another possibility?
HMS Wishart seems to have rejoined the Mediterranean Fleet, in June of 1938, after being Guardship at Greenwich, in 1937, for the opening of the National Maritime Museum by King George VI. I probably have this completely wrong, but are those listed in the left column naval bases or shore establishments of one sort or another? If so, it should be possible to find out which of those in the Mediterranean, HMS Wishart was (attached?) to. JT Last edited by Jelly Terror; 28-02-23 at 03:59 AM. |

The ships listed on the left with no ships listed in brackets were ships/bases the rating served in.
The ships in brackets are tenders to the ships/bases on the left. The tenders were the ships which the rating served in. The ships listed on the left before the tenders are his accounting bases on which he was borne for pay etc. David |

Based on the dates :
July 1938 - St.Angelo - HMS St.Angelo (Fort St.Angelo) Malta. Quote:

March 1939 - HMS Bulldog - Gibraltar - 'Plane Guard' for HMS Glorious. Quote:

These record cards were introduced on January 1st 1929 onwards but for some reason they stopped the entries around 1941.
There should be a discharge date at the bottom of the page. David. |

Thank you all for your time and feedback.
Besides badges to Maltese regiments, I have a modest collection of medals to Maltese personnel, being army or navy. Prior to 1929, naval service records were quite straight forward, however coming 1930's the Admiralty just made it a tad more complicated to interpret. So just to compress what has been stated: he would have served on the ship in (brackets) which would have in turn served the ship on the left hand side?! Yes most Royal Navy service records which I have researched stopped entries in 1941 and some just earlier. Entries were then entered after 1945! Reason I would not know!! Discharge dates have been seen at the front of the record but also at the back. Re HMS Colossus, that was my initial thought, but Colossus was scrapped in 1928 according to Wikipedia, while here it's 1938??? Need to have a look at the Med Fleet in 1938. Thank you all again. Info I've found appears to back this up:
September 1938 - HMS Wishart - Gibraltar - Escort for HMS Glorious. March 1939 - HMS Bulldog - Gibraltar - 'Plane Guard' for HMS Glorious. Quote:

The dates and details appear to match a 2016 newspaper article from the "Times of Malta". Quote:

Mentioned in Navy News magazine 2003.
It looks like his 'first' service record takes him up to the time he trained/joined the subs. Quote:
