H.R.H. Princess Alice, wife of the Earl of Athlone, Governor General of Canada, & granddaughter of Queen Victoria. Princess Alice was the Honorary Commandant of the WRCNS during 2WW.

Joan Gilchrist was stationed at Wallis House(part of HMCS Bytown) from Feb 21 to July 25, 1943.

Joan was selected for a commission during the summer of 1943 & commenced her training at Hardy House(another adjunct of HMCS Bytown) on July 25, 1943, she was rated as a Cadet Wren for her period of officer training. She was in Class IX(9).

Joan is third from the right second row, to the right of the very tall girl(her right) between the two rows:

Graduating class of Probationary Sub Lieutenants, WRCNS - Aug 14,1943.
I am not 100% certain exactly where Joan is in this blurry photo but think she is third row standing on the left:

Cadet Wren Languedoc, who featured in Post 9 on page 1.
She was in a class a couple ahead of Joan Gilchrist.
Note the white band being worn on the her hat. She wears the brass buttons on her tunic as she was a PO prior to commissioning.

Hi RCN,

Very nice photo album. I do have some ww2 amator photo albums from RN & RCN sailors having served on convoys escort vessels, but unfortunately not yet from WR(C)NS ladies.

Thanks for sharing.
