Default Wound stripes

Hi, Does anyone know what these are. I always thought these were WW1 wound stripes with he red one possibly meaning the wearer was wounded in a previous war? Or maybe a 1914 wound?

Hi NZEF,

According to New Zealand Army Distinguishing Patches 1911-1991 by Malcolm Thomas and Cliff Lord, page 54:

2NZEF Order 120/1944, Wound Stripes and Service Chevrons:
.....a single wound stripe , of red rayon braid, will be worn in respect of wounds sustained in previous wars, .....

So your patch would date from WW2 and the red stripe would most probably denote wound(s) sustained in WW1.

Cheers,
Tinto

Hi Tinto,
many thanks for your response.I assumed all this time they were WW1 stripes! Yes, the New Zealand Army Distinguishing Patches 1911-1991 books by Malcolm Thomas and Cliff Lord contain a wealth of information. I also imagine there wouldn't be many WW1 veterans still in a position to be wounded in 1944, i wonder if these could have been issued in the immediate years prior to the 1944 RO.
