NZ Corps of Signals badge designs
Hi all,
I was doing a bit of badge research at Wellington archives last week and I thought this might be of some interest as it is something most badge collectors seldom see. First up is a NZ Post & Telegraph badge design submitted by Captain Combs, Adjutant North Island Battalion. (Received by the QuarterMaster General on the 26th June 1912) The following are a couple of the original projected designs for the NZ Corps of Signals badge. Lastly, the original drawings of the final design in kings crown. Brent |

Hi Brent,
Good stuff, thanks. Are other New Zealand badges filed in this way? I'm particularly interested in the origins of the WW1 Reinforcement badges. Cheers, Tinto |

Hi Tinto,
The Wellington archives holds lots of fantastic information, the problem is, each file name only contains a one-line description for what may hold 100s of pages of information. I am currently targeting five badge subjects at the moment. NZ Machine Gun Corps NZ Military Police Maori Battalion NZ Medical Corps Reinforcement Badges I went to archives this afternoon to check out the Register of Designs, which is where I think my best hopes lay for finding original design sketches of the reinforcement badges. However, I am afraid it is going to take some time to unravel all the secrets behind the Registered design numbers. I do have a copy of an original advertisement from a camp jeweller showing a sketch of a 19th Reinforcements badge. Heres a couple of wartime artworks that I snapped some pics of today. Hi Brent,
Seems you have a very interesting project underway. It would be good to unearth more details of the badge designers, the unsung heroes of our hobby! Good Luck, Tinto |

Hi Tinto,
Fortunately I have the list of the known manufacturers that Geoff Lowe has included in his NZ Reinforcement Badge book, and another list of actual camp jewellers as well. If there are original designs still in existance, I'm sure I will find them, if not, I would settle for a written paper trail. It would be nice to be able to put a manufacturer to each RD number. Cheers Brent |
