I'd be more inclined to go with a bog standard cap badge plated by an old comrade for ease of cleaning.

I am so sorry for the delay in my answer here,

I would agree with a number of peoples replies;

1. Territorial Army
2. Bandsman
3. A soldier who wished to have his badge Silver Plated

All of these are acceptable reasons for the badge you have shown

But !!! The (Silver Badge) on side cap is almost certainly the correct answer.

This would have been worn during WW2 by an RASC "STAFF CAR DRIVER" on his side cap, when "OFF" duty.

"Silver-plated" cap badge worn by a staff car driver "off-duty"!!. Why???. White metal badges were worn by Vols./TF/TA in all patterns up to 1949. Bandsmen wore chromed badges pre-WW2. As someone has already said, probably done by an old comrade for parade wear. In my opinion it is of no help to anyone on this forum to indulge in bulls##t for the sake of coming up with an answer.

When I acquired it a few years back ,it came with a WW2 ATS badge.
not sure if that's going to help with the id bit.
