Default RIN / VRI Badge

Hi everyone,
I was wondering if the knowledgeable members of this forum could help me narrow down the following? I have recently purchased the following belt which I believed to be a rifle officers VRI sword belt, post 1901. A friend/collector has suggested that the belt is in fact Navy, possibly RIN [brass on black leather means navy] I must confess, my naval knowledge is lacking and I have never come across a Naval belt with a VRI clasp. VRI clasps were used by the Indian army and other colonies. Did the Royal Indian Navy also wear the clasp?

Looking forward to hearing your suggestions,
Gregory.

Default RIN/VRI badge

Hi!

This belt plate has nothing to do with the Royal Indian Navy. The belt plate shown below is that used by the Royal Indian Marine (1892 - 1934). This example has the Imperial Crown which was used until 1902 when the King's Crown was adopted. The same belt plate was worn when the RIM became the Royal Indian Navy in 1934 and was worn until India became a Republic in 1951.

Pete

Your first idea - colonial rifle unti - still seems reasonable to me. Indian or one of the other colonies.
