One Pound “War Memento” brooch
Hello all,
Just acquired this neat little piece in a small lot of WWI items. Anyone know the backstory?

As far as I understand, the British Government on the outbreak of the First World War wished to conserve their stocks of gold and told the Bank of England not to exchange any denomination of banknote for gold. Gold sovereigns were withdrawn and replaced by paper one pound banknotes which were nicknamed ‘Bradburys’ because of the signature on the note. I assume that the small tin button badges were sold to commemorate this event and as has been suggested may have been a fund raiser for the war effort.

I find the slight differences in wording to be interesting :
"A MOMENTO OF THE WAR" "SOUVENIR OF THE GREAT WAR" "A MOMENTO OF THE GREAT EUROPEAN WAR" One organisation bringing out different versions or similar idea used by various organisations ? N.B - "Bradbury" £1 notes ceased to be legal tender on 12th June 1920.
