You see quite a lot of these in Antique shops now described as Shell or ammunition buckets, quite often with a painted heraldic device on them. Simon. |

They were for conveying cartridges from the magazine to the gun, used for any nature of gun that did not have its cartridges contained in zinc cylinders.
Land service and Naval apparently. There were about 25 different sizes(?) for different types of ordnance. Around in the 1880s and I imagine much earlier. Keith |
