It is a Staffordshire military related badge. That said, I'll let the more informed expand on that.

It started off as a Pouch Belt Plate for one of the Staffordshire Rifle Volunteers, post 1859, a generic version without a unit number.

Some time in its life, probably late Victorian era judging by its fittings its been altered at the rear by the removal of 2 screw posts and the fitting of a sturdy vertical pin.

This was probably for non military wear after it was no longer required.

Nice p plate, the damage at the front suggests that a hole has been drilled in the plate, a fixing added into the pin back, then soldered over, shame as that’s a very difficult repair. All the same a nice badge
