Default RASC - PLASTIC/BAKELITE

Hi chap's, wanted to ask the rarity of this little number. Any estimates on a good price to pay for it. Not an area I'm use to

Thanks

Simon.

Simon,
Plastic is the correct term, Bakerlite is totally wrong as it is a completely different substance! There are few variations of this badge (3 that I'm aware of) and they sell for £5-15 on a good day!

Gentlemen,

Please can we get the basics right.

The word is:-

Bakelite

The product is an early Thermosettingplastic and it is a form of plastic.

A lot of the products from the 1920's & 30's also contained asbestos fibres. Hence concerns today from our friends in the H&S world as to the removal of toilet seats etc. I'm not joking.

At times we appear to devolve into Wikipedia World on this Forum (although they did manage to spell Bakelite correctly).

Cofion Gorau,

Giggle, snigger, chuckle, chorkle

Hmmmmmm ? Bakelite, ...... OK Cheers for that, I keep saying Bakerlite as well. I am a silly boy, and we must get the wording right.

Longshanks, I have two types of Bakelite badges, one of which I broke the rear blade on whilst cleaning it, ........... Dummy, so i'll have to buy another.
(Be careful with it, when cleaning)

Types are both "Chocolate" coloured, with twin blade fittings East and West.

Type 1 is made by, A. Stanley & Sons - Walsall marked beneath the blades. "Alfred Stanley & Sons" (912,752 were made)

Type 2 is made by, "F&G" Fraser & Glass, marked above the blades
(65,000 were made)

I am not aware of a third type, but I'm a newbee at this.

You can find them pretty cheap at the moment but once people realise they are becoming scarce, especially "F&G", then .....??

Yes £5 - £15 is a nice price, I got mine for a little cheaper than that.
(You should wait until you find one with no one bidding on it.)

Good luck
The FBK

I was under the impression that "Bakelite" was a company name, so to call a plastic from another manufacturer bakelite is like calling any old vacuum cleaner a "Hoover", but I could be wrong.

Here are my 2 plastic RASCs, the right hand F&G version is a lot thicker than the Stanley.

Incidentally my stanley is marked 2-A, are there any other codes noted on Stanley plastic RASCs? Rob.

Kefyn,
fanks four poyntin owt mi oorfull speelink! My point was that the badges are not made from Bakelite but plastic. Bakelite being a much harder and brittle substance.

Yes Jerry
I would agree with you on that point, what with nearly 1,000,000 produced in total, i'd be inclined to say there were batches of badges made, and numbering would be the way forward to identify errors if and when they occured. FBK

Plastic economy badges were made from cellulose acetate, RASC Alfred Stanley & Sons, marked A STANLEY & SONS WALSALL total production 912.752. RASC
Fraser & Glass marked F&G total production 65.000.
The third pattern unmarked plastic badge looks more like the F&G one, so I suspect Fraser & Glass made a new die somewhere along the line, as there is no third maker known.

Rgds,

Thank you for that fougasse1940, I'm learning more every day here, wonderful site. And of course, thank you also to Longshanks.

I'll keep an eye out for the unmarked ones also. FBK

Thanks everyone for the input. This is going on Ebay at the moment with a load of junk badges for $10. I though I might pick it up. But it's really not my area of collecting, so I think I'll pass on it.

Thanks agin to all and have a good weekend.

Regards

Simon.

Correct, it is named after its inventor Leo Baekeland:
