Last two, first no problems the second bears the arms of Gt Yarmouth but that's as much as I know

Neil, can you please confirm that the first badge you showed in post #1 is a single-die all white metal stamping as opposed to a bi-metal? Thanks in advance.

Thanks Neil. I suspect then it's a Volunteer Battalion example? AlanO has one in his pre-1908 VB and militia badges album. He thinks his may be for the 1st VB Battalion Norfolk, and I can think of no reason why yours was not worn by the same? Interesting to note that each are from different dies. Two more for me to look out for!

I had assumed that it was and made a similar assumption for the w/m Suffolk in my Suffolk thread

4th Norfolk Rifle Vols Shako plate
The badge with the Gt. Yarmouth crest is a 4th Norfolk Rifle Volunteers Shako plate, worn 1859-60 and probably later.
Your badge is an officers I think. Rob Last edited by Sonofacqms; 29-12-20 at 12:45 PM. |

In 1877 it joined the new 1st Administrative Battalion of Norfolk Rifle Volunteers (together with three Suffolk units). In 1881 the 1st Admin. Bn. consolidated as the 2nd Norfolk (Norfolk and Suffolk) RVC and the old 2nd provided 'A', 'B', 'C' and 'D' companies. See also: Infantry Volunteers Norfolk - Suffolk

Thanks Rob and Henk RVC was always a possibility but the number changes and reorganizations they all went through along with their apparent lag in updating uniforms therefore badges makes it difficult, that and did think someone might just say police. I found your second link Henk very interesting

Below is a silver plate example that I have which I never got to the bottom of. I did make an enquiry at the regimental museum when it existed, but they never bothered to even acknowledge my request.

The figure of Britannia without helmet, armed with a spear rather than a trident* and with the lion at her feet**, corresponds with the emblem on this shoulder belt plate circa 1845 (* the trident was reintroduced in the 1840s **The seal of the Bank of England has a pile of coins- subtle).

So, the picture below was described as a Norfolk Cadet when I purchased it. Of course, the image is a little blurred, but it certainly looks like C/4/NORFOLK to me. Last edited by Nozzer; 16-11-21 at 10:37 PM. |
